About
After Our Time is a website dedicated to the BBC Radio 4 programme ‘In Our Time’. Each week, In Our Time explores the history of ideas, which can include subjects as diverse as infinity, epistolary literature, the Roman Republic, and Buddhism. Three experts, moderated by Melvyn Bragg, take part in a 40 minute live recorded show that provides an outstanding introduction to each of the subjects.
There are few programmes that can span the divide between arts and sciences in a way that is unforced, but somehow In Our Time manages. It also demonstrates that live panel discussions can be both lively and constructive, rather than confrontational. In Our Time represents one of the BBC’s best programmes, and so it’s unsurprising that it’s one of the BBC’s most downloaded podcasts.
Since the programme is available as a podcast, and its archives are available for streaming online, even if you don’t have a radio or don’t live in the UK, you can still listen to every single edition produced - over 200 of them, representing over 130 hours.
After Our Time has three parts: a weblog, forum and wiki.
Weblog: Commentary and thoughts on recent editions of In Our Time and the programme itself.
Forum: Discussion of the topics covered in the programme and anything related, as well as a off-topic area. Registration is completely free; come on in!
Wiki: Complete searchable programme guide with additional resources for anyone looking to find out more about programme topics. And of course, it’s editable by anyone.
Read Welcome to After Our Time for a good (if long) introduction to this website.
Who runs this site?
After Our Time is run by Adrian Hon, an alternate reality game designer who doesn’t own a radio. He began this website after realising that his own weblog was gradually being taken over by posts about In Our Time.
If you’d like to contact Adrian about this website (e.g. if you’d like to contribute to the weblog, press enquiries), please email adrian@NOSPAMmssv.net (remove the NOSPAM part).
Please note that this is an unofficial website - it is not produced by Radio 4.
